Trout fishing in America is as diverse as the land itself. With so many generous miles of coastal shoreline, the fishing bounty in America is virtually unlimited. There are various kinds of trout found here. The Lake trout are swift and torpedo like.
Trout fishing in America is nothing without the Brook trout. Natural population of this variety resides in lake Superior but Wisconsin and Minnesota are also stocking up on this fish. In the latter, the "coaster" variety of the trout is found, and these weigh more than the stream dwelling trout. The delicate white meat of the brook trout is yet another reason for its popularity.
The Brown Trout is a native of North America and Wisconsin. Browns grow faster and live longer than other trout. They are however the wariest of all fish and are very shy. They will come out only at night or dusk even for feeding. Sport fishermen who try to net this variety usually arrive at dusk or at sunrise during the Spring or Fall. Browns are found aplenty in Michigan as well as Illinois. The record Brown weighed nearly 30 pounds. Rainbow Trout grow to between 5-8 pounds and are also popularly called steelheads. These are big game fish, strike aggressively and fight valiantly. There is a strain among these that move into the ocean and return to the freshwater when they are ready to spawn. The Steelhead is wide ranging in Lake Huron as well as Lake Michigan. Some of these migrate as far away as the Lake Superior. These fish seldom swim lower than 35 feet and are easy to locate. By the time they reach maturity, they may weigh 12-16 pounds. Unlike many other varieties, the rainbow trout survives even after spawning and may spawn 2-3 times during its lifetime. Kentucky also has a well established but small rainbow trout industry. Here commercial fishing is encouraged. Trolling is by far the easiest and the most effective way for trout fishing in America. For the angler, fly-fishing is also an easy way to catch good trout. Alaska rainbow trout fishing is nothing short of fantastic. Wild Alaska Trout are present in huge numbers and a strong salmon run has also been observed in the last 5 years. The prime trout fishing season here is in June, July, August and September. At this time, anglers average about 15-20 fish daily and top anglers net about 35-40 fish per day. The Alagnak is irrefutably one of Alaska's best trout fishing rivers and also one of the very best in the world. The other popular location for trout fishing in America includes Arizona (which produces some of the best browns in the world), Arkansas and California. California gets some very big King Salmons too. Late season opportunities are good in Indiana Salt Creek. Steelheads abound here. Florida provides the best opportunity for shallow water fishing. As the water turns cold, the fish really begin to flow in. Maine is known for salmon and Brook trout.
